Hilary Hahn plays Ernst’ s Grand Caprice on Schubert’s Der Erlkönig, Op. 26

Hilary Hahn performs Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst’s Grand Caprice on Schubert’s Der Erlkönig, Op. 26 “Le roi des aulnes”. This transcription on Schubert’s Der Erlkonig is considered as one of the most difficult violin pieces ever composed and Hilary’s performance is sublime!

    @aferrante4 No, quite possible to play 4 at once. U need incredible bow control

    By far the best performance of this very difficult work that I’ve heard. Thanks for sharing.

    @chessmeister I think this is better than Kremer’s recording not only because of sound quality and intonation, but basically because Hahn seems to be much more observant to the voicing and narratives of the actual poem, which in my opinion, with all respect to technical achievements, is still what this is all about…

  5. MuJu0705 says:

    At first she plays g and d together, after that d and b and then b flat and g

  6. aferrante4 says:

    @Monoprixchen

  7. Monoprixchen says:

    @aferrante4

    no its g minor, as originally set by Schubert

  8. aferrante4 says:

    @gougueule23
    It is an Eb chord

  9. aferrante4 says:

    @gougueule23
    it is the very last note. it is a E flat chord

  10. gougueule23 says:

    @aferrante4
    Well I could not find that 4-note chord, if possible let me know the exact time mm:ss
    That chord would be quite amazing indeed.

  11. aferrante4 says:

    @gougueule23
    yes, but wat my question is, how does she do all four notes at the end? isnt it impossible to play more than two strings at a time?

  12. Od3tt301 says:

    Awesome!!!

  13. gougueule23 says:

    One written comment stated that violin is a monophonic instrument BUT the fact is TWO strings may be played simutaneously.

  14. sophelet says:

    Hilary Hahn was playing like this when she was 10. I heard her play Ernst’s “Last Rose of Summer” when she was that age, and it was AMAZING.

  15. HahnPotterishFowlnut says:

    @peapodesque She’s actually thirty years old.

  16. HahnPotterishFowlnut says:

    @chessmeister but you can feel the story in this one… kremers is… icky.

  23. 117CamBam says:

    Wow why don’t more people take it this slow? It sounds so much better, like actual music rather than just a mere technical etude or something.
